Healthcare

Keeping things clean in healthcare facilities is often taken for granted.

There’s clean.  And there’s the level of cleanliness needed to fight the battle against healthcare associated infections (HAIs).

The battle against HAIs and MDROs

As professionals know, the importance of cleanliness and infection prevention is increasing with rapidly developing multidrug resistant organisms (MDROs).  Studies estimate that MDRO infections have increased direct costs to society by between 30% – 100%.  For example, the extra cost of a single MRSA infection compared with a methicillin-sensitive S. aureus infection is estimated to range from $3,000 to $25,000.

Infection control: hand hygiene alone isn’t enough

Infections are transmitted in a variety of ways in healthcare facilities.  One of the most common ways of transmission is by hands, whether it’s by hands of patients, their friends and relatives or staff.  But hand hygiene alone isn’t enough.  If fingertips touch a contaminated surface, then organisms on the surface can be transmitted in patients, staff and visitors.  In order to protect against HAIs and MDROs,  hospitals, assisted living and other facilities must do more.  The Centers for Disease Control provides more information at its Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee website.
